Smith Design Group coordinated with a local citizens/faculty group established by the School District to establish program parameters. The District's funding for a practice gym addition to meet Title IX mandates had to be weighted against the citizen/faculty group's desire for a music facility also. Our ability to make measured and reasonable cost projections determined that a combination facility was feasible if we kept tight control of the size. The final design proposal was approved by both the citizen/faculty group and the Board of Trustees as an effective solution.
Due to the hillside configuration of the existing high school and TRPA's unique height ordinance our firm was instrumental in brokering an understanding with TRPA to allow the gym to be located adjacent to the existing gym at the high side of the school.
